Cheongju City FC was a football franchise from the city of Cheongju in South Korea . The club last played in the K3 League Advance , the fourth highest division in South Korea. According to the plans of the Cheongju city council, the club should compete in the K League in the coming years . At the end of 2018, the club merged with city rivals Cheongju FC to form the new club Cheongju FC .
history
prehistory
On October 3, 2005, the soccer franchise Cheonan FC , which also played in the K3 League , was founded. At the time, the franchise was using the newly built Cheonan football center to play their home games. On February 10, 2007, the franchise submitted an application to the KFA for inclusion and eligibility to participate in the newly founded K3 League and shortly afterwards joined the K3 League in the premiere season. A year later, Cheonan City FC, a semi-professional club was founded by the city, which is why they owned two football franchises from then on. Four years later, on December 27, 2012, the Cheonan FC Social Cooperative Promoters Competition took place . The founding general assembly itself took place on January 25, 2013 in the new year. On June 21, 2013, the South Korean Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism allowed the association, and thus an association for the first time, to set up its own cooperatives. In the course of time the association got into economic difficulties due to financial losses. As a result, a general assembly of the association was held on January 30, 2016, in which it was decided that the association should be sold.
founding
The large corporation SMC Engineering finally bought the club and concluded an agreement with the city of Cheongju, so that the club moved from Cheonan to Cheongju before the start of the 2016 season and was henceforth called Cheongju City FC . The new association was officially founded on March 11, 2016.
Early years as a new club (2016-2018)
At the start of the season, the club's management set the goal of reaching the championship games. They were able to achieve this goal. The club took a remarkable 3rd place at the end of the season. The club was also able to win the first-ever Cheongju derby , against Cheongju FC even 1-0. In the quarter-finals of the championship games, the club met Yangju Citizen FC , which ended 1-1. But since Cheongju had home rights, they automatically won the game and then met Jeonju FC in the semi-finals . The semi-final game also ended 1-1. But since Cheongju City FC also had home rights here, they also won this game. In the final, they then met FC Pocheon . The first leg in Cheongju ended in a goalless draw. But they lost the second leg 2: 4, so they narrowly missed the league championship. In addition to the league, they also competed in the Korean FA Cup . There they met in their first round on Gwangju University , which they could defeat 1-0. In the next round, they encountered Yongin University . The game ended 1-1, but in the subsequent penalty shoot-out they beat Yongin 4-3. In the 4th main round of the Cup, they met the first division club Incheon United , which they were just under 0: 1 at the end of the cup game.
In the following season, the club was even able to improve to 2nd place in the table. In the following championship games, they met Gimpo Citizen FC at home . The game ended 3: 3. Since the home team also automatically won in a draw there, Cheongju City FC automatically won the game. In the semi-finals that followed, they met Hwaseong FC . The game ended goalless. Here too, Cheongju automatically won the game due to home rights and was thus in the final of the league championship. There they met again on FC Pocheon. Cheongju won the first leg 1-0, but they lost the second leg in Pocheon 2-0, so they were again only runner-up in the K3 League. In their first round of the Korean FA Cup 2017, they faced league rivals Paju Citizen FC , whom they defeated 3-1 on penalties. In the following round they met the second division Seongnam FC , which they had to beat 1: 3.
The following 2018 season was very disappointing in terms of sport. The club ended the season in the league in 6th place in the table and was therefore unable to qualify for the championship games for the first time. Things didn't go well in the cup either. In their first round, the club lost to Gimhae City FC on penalties 4-5 and were eliminated unusually early. After the end of the season, the city of Cheongju announced that the two clubs Cheongju City FC and Cheongju FC would merge into a common football franchise. The Cheongju Derby was held for the last time in 2018.
Professionalization of the association
The main goal of the city and SMC Engineering was to compete with Cheongju City FC in the K League in the future. Talks were held over the course of the 2017 season and agreements were signed with the K League. After the end of the season, the only thing missing was the budget to join the K League. However, the city administration refused a corresponding budget for the K League and instead gave the club only a budget for the K3 League. The decision of the city administration caused great and severe criticism.
