Jeonju FC is a soccer franchise based in Jeonju , South Korea . The franchise currently plays in the K3 League Basic , the fifth-highest division in South Korea. The club is a founding member of the K3 League. The association belongs to Jeonju University .

history

founding

The club was founded in 2007 when the new amateur association K3 League was founded. Jeong Jin-hyeok was the club's first coach. The club entered 2007 under the name Jeonju EM Korea FC in the K3 League. Originally it was planned that the club should compete in the Korea National League , but since the club could not meet the necessary requirements, the club joined the K3 League.

First years (2007 - 2010)

Your premier season went well. The club finished the season on a good 5th place and thus qualified for the Korean FA Cup 2008. In the 2008 season, the club was renamed Jeonju EM FC . Their second season the club did not get beyond a two-digit place in the table and ended the season in 10th place and thus missed the renewed qualification for the Korean FA Cup. Your premiere cup season went well. In the first round, the club Hwaseong Shinwoo Electronics FC received , against whom they were able to prevail 6: 5 in the penalty shootout. The club lost the second cup round to Seoul United FC 3-0. After the end of the season, the contract with Jeong Jin-hyeok was not renewed.

In 2009, the club fought for qualification for the Korean FA Cup. In the end, the club lacked three points to qualify. The club finished the season with 45 points in 11th place. For the 2010 season, all K3 League members were divided into two groups. Jeonju played in group A. The club reached a good 4th place there, but the club qualified for the Korean FA Cup.

Mediocrity (2011-2015)

The 2011 season ended again in fourth place and also qualified for the Korean FA Cup. In 2011, the Challengers Cup was also held for the first time . The club was eliminated in the round of 16 against Asan United FC . In the cup, the club was eliminated in the first round. There they received the Dongguk University , to which they lost 1: 4. In 2012 the club deteriorated for the first time in the league. The club finished the season in 5th place with 28 points. The club was also not successful in the Challengers Cup. The club was eliminated in the group stage in last place.

In 2013 the club renamed itself again. From then on, the club was called Jeonbuk Maeil FC . In addition, a new trainer was introduced with Oh In-eui. However, he could not record any successes either. So they finished the season in the league again in 5th place. In the cup, however, the club celebrated successes. In the first round they met Sungkyunkwan University , which they could beat 1-0. In the next round they received Bucheon FC 1995 , which they could beat 3-1 on penalties. In the subsequent third round they played against Incheon United FC , against which they lost 4-1. Despite the cup success, Oh In-eui had to leave at the end of the season. The club renamed itself for the last time at the end of 2013. The club entered under the name Jeonju FC from the season .

In 2014, the club set the goal of qualifying for the league championship. However, the club missed this target by 5 points and ended the season again in fourth place. There were also no successes in the cup. The club lost the first round game against Dankook University 3-0. In 2015, the club hired a new coach, Yang Yeong-cheol. The club's playing time in the league was worse than it has been for several years. The club had to be content with 6th place in the table. The club didn't get far in the cup either. In their first round, the club won the cup game against Dong-eui University 1-0. In the following round, the club lost to Changwon City FC 2-0.

K3 League Advance Time (2016-2018)

In 2016 the qualification for the K3 League Advance was due. The club managed the direct qualification thanks to a very good 5th place in the table. Furthermore, the club qualified for the first time for the championship games. In the quarter-finals, the club met Gimpo Citizen FC , which they could beat 1-0. In the semifinals they then met Cheongju City FC . The game ended 1-1, but since Cheongju had home rights, the draw was considered a defeat for Jeonju. In the cup, however, the club was eliminated again early. In their first round, the club lost 2-1 to league rivals Yangpyeong FC . In 20176 the club played almost consistently against relegation. In the end, the club was two points ahead of a relegation zone and thus managed to stay in the league. The cup season went better than the previous season. In their first round, the club met Jungang University , which they defeated 5-2. However, the club lost the subsequent cup round against Jeonnam Dragons FC 4-0.

In 2018, the club played against relegation, but this time the club could not save itself. With four points behind the relegation place, the club rose in 11th place from the advance. The 2018 cup season also ended relatively early for the club. In their first round, the club won 1-0 against Chosun University . However, the club lost the subsequent round to Chuncheon FC 2: 3.

After relegation from the K3 League Advance, the club completely reorganized the squad and announced promotion as the season's goal. In the cup, the club was able to record successes in this regard. In the first round they received Dongshin University , which they beat 2-1. In the subsequent second round, the club met the previous year's K3 League Basic champion Siheung Citizen FC , who surprisingly could be thrown 1-0 out of the cup. In the third round, the club met Mokpo City FC . The club lost to Mokpo just 0: 1.

There was a derby between Jeonju Ongoeul FC and Jeonju FC due to their geographic location. This derby was called the "Bibimbap Derby".
