The Incheon United FC is a football franchise from Incheon , South Korea . The franchise currently plays in the K League Classic , the top division in South Korea.

history

The franchise was founded in late 2003. Incheon was one of the 10 cities that hosted the 2002 World Cup, so the desire arose to have a city football franchise. The franchise was founded under the name Incheon FC , but was renamed Incheon United FC in December 2003 . The first coach of the new club was Werner Lorant .

They tried to put together a very good squad in order to achieve a good position in the league in the first season. So was u. a. Alpay Özalan signed by Aston Villa . The first opponent in the league history of the franchise was the Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors on April 3, 2004 . The game ended in a goalless draw. The first victory in the K-League could be celebrated on the 3rd matchday when Incheon defeated the reigning champion Seongnam Ilhwa Chunma 1-0. After the first half series, Werner Lorant had to vacate his post towards the end of August 2004. Incheon United was bottom of the table with just 9 points. The second series went much better and they could still score 17 points, but were still only penultimate at the end of the season.

2005 was far better for Incheon. After a 2nd place at the end of the first round and a 3rd place at the end of the second round, Incheon was qualified for the championship playoffs. In the semifinals they defeated Busan IPark 2-0. Ulsan Hyundai was waiting in the final . Incheon clearly lost 5-1 in the first leg, the 2-1 win in the second leg was just cosmetic results. At the end of the season, Incheon United had the highest average attendance in the league with 24,353 viewers.

The following season the league did not go as well and Incheon United was only ninth. However, you could reach the semi-finals in the cup for the first time, which Incheon only lost on penalties. Incheon suffered the same fate a year later when they faced the Chunnam Dragons again in the semi-finals of the Cup. In 2007 she was ninth again.

Since then, the team has always achieved placements in the midfield. In 2012 she took 9th place.

The franchise has never qualified for the AFC Champions League .

Stadion

From the first season 2004 to 2011, the franchise wore its home games at Incheon Munhak Stadium . The stadium was built for the 2002 World Cup . It had a capacity of 50,256 spectators.

In 2008, construction of a smaller stadium started as the Incheon Munhak Stadium is too big and does not belong to the franchise. The stadium was completed in 2012. It's called the Incheon Football Stadium and has a capacity of 20,891 spectators. It was built on the site of the Incheon Civil Stadium built in 1934.
