Asian Club Championship 2001/02

The AFC Champions League 2002/03 was the first season of the most important Asian competition for club teams in football under this name and the 22nd overall. It was created on the model of the European UEFA Champions League by merging the Asian Club Championship (1985-2002) and the Asian Cup Winners' Cup (1990-2002). 16 clubs from 11 national associations took part in the competition.

The season began with the first qualifying round on August 13, 2002 and ended with the second leg of the final on October 11, 2003 at the Rajamangala National Stadium in Bangkok , the capital of Thailand . Al Ain Club won the competition with a 2-0 first leg and a 0-1 second leg against BEC-Tero Sasana .

In the 2002/2003 season, the first edition of the Champions League was played in the following mode: After a three-stage qualification, 16 teams played four group winners in four four-stage tournaments (each taking place at one location) - two for West Asia and two for East Asia. They then met each other in the semi-finals in the first and second leg.
