Seol Ki-hyeon (born January 8, 1979 in Jeongseon , South Korea ) is a South Korean football player . The striker is currently under contract with Incheon United FC .
Club career
Although he was advised to start his professional career either in the Korean K-League or in the Japanese J-League , Seol Ki-hyeon decided in 2000 to take the supposedly more difficult route and directly from the team at his university, the Kwangwoon University , Seoul , to switch to a European professional league. His first club was Royal Antwerp , in his first season he was able to score ten goals in 25 appearances in the first division , so that the larger Belgian clubs became aware of him and courted him. He went to the largest, the RSC Anderlecht . His first appearance for Anderlecht in the Belgian Super Cup couldn't have gone better for him, he managed a hat trick in twelve minutes, but for the rest of the season he only scored three more league goals , as well as the first Champions League goal by a Korean.
His second season went better with twelve league goals, but the third season of 2003/04 was overshadowed by many injury-related breaks, so that he only made 19 appearances and Anderlecht tried to give up Seol Ki-hyeon. Shortly after the start of the 2004/05 season, an agreement was reached with the Wolverhampton Wanderers from England, who had just been relegated to the second English division called the Football League Championship . Since then he has played quite successfully with the Wolves; He scored eight goals in 69 league games. Until the summer of 2007 he played for the Premier League club Reading FC and moved to Fulham FC for the 2007/08 season . In the winter break of the 2008/09 season he was loaned to the Saudi Arabian club Al-Hilal until the end of the season. In January 2010, Seol Ki-hyeon agreed with the club management of Fulham FC on an early termination of the contract and hired in his South Korean home with the Pohang Steelers .
National team
His first appearance for the South Korean national team was when he was just 21 years old in January 2000, when he was still playing for his university, and since then he has mostly been a regular; he completed all games of the selection both at the Confederations Cup 2001 and the 2002 World Cup in Japan and his home country. There he also scored the most important goal of his career when he equalized 1-1 in the 1/8 final against Italy in the 88th minute and thus enabled his homeland to advance. He was also in the selection of Korea for the 2006 World Cup in Germany, but was only a two-time substitute, so that he comes to a total of nine World Cup finals.
