In the metro accident in Valencia on July 3, 2006, a train on the Valencia metro , Spain , derailed due to excessive speed and overturned. 43 people died.

accident

The Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat Valenciana train ran on line 1 between the Plaça d'Espanya [sic] and Joaquín Sorolla-Jesús stations . As the evaluation of the tachograph showed, it was traveling at 80 km / h twice as fast as permitted. Shortly before 1:03 p.m. the train derailed in a curve.

The driver , who was killed in the accident, was responsible for the drastic speeding . As it became known years later, he suffered from epilepsy and was therefore not allowed to drive a train.

consequences

43 people died and 47 were additionally injured, 10 of them seriously. The fire brigade and the police were alerted via a passenger's cell phone from the crashed train.

During the visit of Pope Benedict XVI. in Valencia , a few days after the accident, he prayed for the accident victims at the Joaquín Sorolla-Jesús station .

Since the driver, who also died in the accident, was initially blamed for the accident, there was no reason for further criminal investigations. Years later, however, after his illness was discovered, due to which he should never have steered a train and the suspicion arose that the original investigation had been manipulated by the Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat Valenciana , the investigation was resumed with the aim of bringing those to justice to draw who had allowed this. The proceedings initiated as a result have not yet been completed.
