Sainte-Geneviève is a district of Montreal . It is located in the west of the Île de Montréal on the banks of the Rivière des Prairies , opposite the Île Bizard . Until 2002, Sainte-Geneviève was an independent municipality and is now part of the arrondissement L'Île-Bizard-Sainte-Geneviève .

history

The signing of the Great Peace of Montreal in 1701 allowed the French to colonize the previously unsafe western part of the island. In 1720 a road was built for development, after which the Sulpizians parceled out the area. In 1739 the Québec diocese approved the establishment of a parish dedicated to Saint Genoveva , and a chapel was completed the following year. The first church was built in 1751, the existing structure dates from 1843 to 1847.

In 1845 the civil parish of Sainte-Geneviève was founded, which was named after the parish church. From 1893 the Pont Jacques-Bizard connected the place with the Île Bizard and replaced the ferry that had previously crossed the Rivière des Prairies. Due to two splits, the municipal area was significantly reduced. In 1904, Sainte-Geneviève-de-Pierrefonds (now Pierrefonds ) went into business for himself, followed by Dollard-Des Ormeaux in 1924 . In the 2001 census, Sainte-Geneviève had 3,278 inhabitants in an area of 0.86 km².

On January 1, 2002, Sainte-Geneviève merged with the city of Montreal. The place was then united with Pierrefonds and Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue in one arrondissement . A referendum was held against the merger ordered by the provincial government. On June 20, 2004 the result was 495 votes out of 259 for the spin-off. However, the required quorum (approval of 35% of all registered voters) was clearly missed, which is why Sainte-Geneviève finally stayed with Montreal.
