The 1936/37 season was the first regular season of the International-American Hockey League (from 1940 American Hockey League - AHL), which was created by the merger of the International Hockey League and the Canadian-American Hockey League . During the regular season, the eight teams were supposed to play 48 games each, but the Buffalo Bisons had to stop playing after eleven games for financial reasons. The five best teams in the league then played in a play-off round for the Calder Cup .

The five best teams in the American Hockey League qualified for the play-offs. While three teams received a bye in the first play-off round , the other two qualified teams competed from the first play-off round. The first play-off round took place in best-of-three mode, and then the second round series between Philadelphia and Springfield. The final itself, as well as the second round series of Syracuse and Pittsburgh, however, were played in the best-of-five mode.
