The Kazakh National Pedagogical University Abai ( Kazakh Абай атындағы Қазақ ұлттық педагогикалық университеті , Russian Казахский национальный педагогический университет имени Абая ) is a pedagogical university in the Kazakh city of Almaty . The university, founded in 1928, was named after the Kazakh poet, writer and thinker Abai Qunanbajuly .

history

In view of the great shortage of well-trained specialists in Central Asia, the Council of People's Commissars of the Kazakh ASSR decided on June 2, 1926 to transform the Kazakh educational institute in Tashkent into a Kazakh pedagogical institute. After the decision of the Council of People's Commissars, preparations began for the relocation of the new institute to Alma-Ata, the new capital of the Kazakh Soviet Republic. In March 1927, the political leadership made the decision to convert the pedagogical institute into a university. Personalities such as Oras Shandosov , Chalel Dosmuchamedow and Temirbek Shurgenow played an important role in the organization of the university . The first rector of the university was Sanshar Asfendiyarov .

The university was officially established on October 1, 1928 as the Kazakh State University with only a single pedagogical faculty . There were 124 students and nine professors at the university. Three different faculties were originally planned to open in 1932. In 1930 the Kazakh State University was renamed the Kazakh Pedagogical Institute , and five years later it was named after the Kazakh poet, writer, and thinker Abai Qunanbajuly .

About 160 students and teachers left the university during World War II , some of whom were awarded the Hero of the Soviet Union award after the war . Due to the lack of qualified teachers in the post-war period, the university increased the number of admissions for students . In 1946 there were already 362 students and in 1956 more than 500 students.

In October 1990, the institution regained its university status and was renamed the Kazakh Abai State Pedagogical University . On November 24, 1992, it was renamed Almaty State Abai University by ordinance of the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Kazakhstan . In 2003 it was renamed the Kazakh National Abai Pedagogical University .
