Édouard-Marcel Sandoz (born March 21, 1881 in Basel , † March 20, 1971 in Lausanne ) was a sculptor and watercolor painter from Switzerland .

Sandoz was the son of the entrepreneur Edouard-Constant Sandoz . In 1923 he joined the board of directors of Sandoz AG; In 1941 he took over the company's executive post in France. After the death of his father in 1928, Edouard Marcel inherited his country estate Le Denantou in Lausanne, which he converted into his workshop. In the 1920s he developed a light projection method for theater stages. In 1935 he was one of the founding partners of the photo paper manufacturer Tellko SA in Freiburg in Üechtland .

The artist Sandoz studied from 1900 to 1903 at the Haute ecole d'arts appliques de Genève and from 1904 to 1907 at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris with the sculptors Antonin Mercié and Jean-Antoine Injalbert . In 1909 he married Adele Passavant, with whom he settled in the Parisian bohemian Montparnasse district in 1910 .

Sandoz created almost 1,800 sculptures and over 200 porcelain models. In addition to creating human figures, he mainly worked as an animal sculptor, making his objects from materials such as stone , onyx , porcelain , semi-precious stones , bronze and precious metals . He sent numerous exhibitions, including the Salon of the Société nationale des beaux-arts in 1906 and the Salon of the Société des artistes décorateurs in 1911. During the First World War he turned to ceramics and designed models for the porcelain manufactories Théodore Haviland (Limoges), Sèvres and Langenthal . He made numerous small figures, some in Art Nouveau style , others borrowed from Cubism , and still others as statuettes in the Art Deco style . His metal figures were mostly handcrafted by the fine art foundry Susse Frères .

As a painter, he preferred to depict flowers and landscapes. In 1921 he traveled to North Africa and painted watercolors for leaflets. In 1933 he founded the Société Française des Animaliers ( French Society of Animal Sculptors ). He showed his work in the pavilion of the Société des artistes décorateurs at the Paris World Exhibition in 1937 . In 1947 he was elected a member of the Paris Académie des Beaux-Arts . The University of Lausanne awarded him an honorary doctorate in geology and botany in 1959. He received both an appointment as Commander of the Legion of Honor and Commander of the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres .

Works in museums and in public spaces (selection)

Some of Sandoz's works are exhibited in the Musée cantonal des beaux-arts de Lausanne , the Musée national Adrien Dubouché in Limoges and in the Musée des beaux-arts in Troyes . The Le Carrefour de la Vie statue is located in the garden of Villa Sauber in Monaco .

The Fontaine aux singes from 1934 is in Parc du Denantou , Lausanne . The work Cygne à sa toilette from 1957 can be seen in Port de Pully . The 1964 Bacchanale des singes is on the quay at Lutry .
