Anthony "Tony" Tanti (born September 7, 1963 in Toronto , Ontario ) is a former Canadian ice hockey player who played 727 games for the Chicago Black Hawks , Vancouver Canucks , Pittsburgh Penguins and Buffalo Sabers in the course of his active career between 1980 and 1998 in the National Hockey League and 271 games for BSC Preussen in the Bundesliga and German Ice Hockey League on the position of the left winger . Tanti celebrated his greatest successes in the jersey of the Canadian national team by winning the silver and bronze medals at the world championships in 1985 and 1986 .

Career

Tanti spent his junior years between 1980 and 1983 with the Oshawa Generals in the Ontario Hockey League . The striker caused a stir in his rookie season when he set a new league goal record with 81 goals and clearly surpassed Wayne Gretzky's previous record with 70 goals. With 150 scorer points , he also finished fourth in the scorer ranking and was the player with the highest points in his position, the right wing. For this he received the Jim Mahon Memorial Trophy . He was also elected to the League's First All-Star Team and received the Emms Family Award as the best newcomer to the league. His outstanding first junior year finally led to the fact that he was selected in the 1981 NHL Entry Draft in twelfth overall position by the Chicago Black Hawks of the National Hockey League . In the following season, the attacker demonstrated his qualities and continued in terms of performance on the previous year. He received again the Jim Mahon Memorial Trophy and this time an appointment to the Second All-Star Team of the league. He also made his debut during the 1981/82 season for the Black Hawks in the NHL and was used there twice.

After Tanti had started the game year 1982/83 in the OHL with the Generals, he was transferred to the Vancouver Canucks in exchange for Curt Fraser in the course of the season by the Black Hawks - who had used him again in the NHL . This brought the striker in January 1983 - immediately after the transfer - in their NHL squad. The winger had previously finished his junior career with 364 points in 166 missions. During the rest of the season, Tanti collected 17 points for Vancouver in 43 missions. By the following season he had finally established himself with the Canucks and scored 45 goals over the course of the season. Even after that, Tanti remained a fixture in the Canucks line-up and was a reliable goalscorer for the following four years, mostly reaching the 40 mark. The team was only moderately successful, while Tantis was part of the franchise . From the 1988/89 season onwards, the attacker's goal scoring deteriorated significantly, so that the team separated from him in January 1990 after seven years together. Together with Rod Buskas and Barry Pederson , it was given to the Pittsburgh Penguins in exchange for Dave Capuano , Andrew McBain and Dan Quinn .

With the Penguins, Tanti found a new sporting home for just over a year, since he was handed over to the Buffalo Sabers in March 1991 . In return, the Penguins who won the Stanley Cup at the end of the season received Ken Priestlay . In Buffalo - as in Pittsburgh - the 28-year-old could not match his successful years in Vancouver, so that his contract was not extended in the summer of 1992.

The Canadian then decided to give his career in Europe new impetus and signed a contract with BSC Preussen from the ice hockey Bundesliga . For the German capital club, he first spent two years in the Bundesliga and then four more years in the newly founded German Ice Hockey League . He achieved at least 30 scorer points in each of the six seasons in Germany. But he could not win a title with the Berliners. After the 1997/98 season , Tanti ended his active career at the age of 34.

International

For his home country, Tanti was in the junior division of the Canadian U20 selection at the 1983 Junior World Cup in Soviet Leningrad . He finished third with the team at the end of the tournament and secured the bronze medal.

The attacker made his debut in the Canadian senior team at the 1985 World Cup in the Czechoslovak capital, Prague . There he reached the silver rank with the team behind the hosts. With seven scorer points in ten missions, Tanti was instrumental in winning the medal. He was just as accurate in the following two World Championship tournaments in 1986 in Moscow and 1987 in Vienna , when he scored eight points each. In 1986 he won another bronze medal, while the following year it was only enough for fourth place in the final ranking.
