Tommy Sandlin

Tommy Sandlin (born March 31, 1944 in Hemlingby near Gävle ; † December 27, 2006 ibid) was a Swedish ice hockey player and coach who was referred to as "ice hockey professor" .

Career

Tommy Sandlin played ice hockey at Gävle GIK and started coaching youth teams at an early age. In 1968 he became the head coach of his home club, which was playing in the second-rate Division 2 at that time. A year later he moved to local rivals Brynäs IF , whom he led to five Swedish championships until 1977 . In 1977 he moved to MODO Hockey within the Elite Series , with whom he was again Swedish champion in 1979.

At the same time he coached the Swedish national ice hockey team between 1978 and 1980 , with which he won the bronze medal at the ice hockey world championship in 1979 and the Olympic bronze medals in 1980 . After these successes he trained MODO Hockey until 1983, before Björklöven was signed by IF . In 1986 he became national coach again and led the national team to the first gold medal in 25 years at the 1987 Ice Hockey World Championship . He remained the head coach of the Tre Kronors until 1990, where he won the Olympic bronze medal in 1988 and the silver medal at the 1990 World Ice Hockey Championship .

In the 1990/91 season he trained again the IF Björklöven in Division I, rather returned to Brynäs IF. In 1993 he won the championship with the club and reached the playoff final again in 1995. In the 1996/97 season he was in charge of the club's junior team, which took part in the SuperElit.

Between 1998 and 2000 he was the head coach at Mora IK , with whom he made promotion from Division I to HockeyAllsvenskan . In the summer of 2001 he was hired by Leksands IF as head coach, but dismissed in the middle of the following season and replaced by Jarmo Tolvanen . Then Sandlin moved to AIK Solna from the Elitserien, where he replaced Kari Jalonen .

Between 2002 and 2004 he trained Tierp HK from Division I before becoming head coach of the Trondheim Black Panthers in the summer of 2004 . In December 2006, he resigned from his post due to health concerns after suffering a heart attack . Sandlin died on December 27, 2006 in his home as a result of the heart attack. He left behind his wife, three adult children and four grandchildren.
