Peter Andersson (born March 2, 1962 in Sundsvall ) is a former Swedish ice hockey player and current coach , who played for the Washington Capitals and Nordiques de Québec in the National Hockey League from 1978 to 1995 .

Career

Peter Andersson began his career as a hockey player at Timrå IK , for whose professional team he was active from 1978 to 1980 in Division 1, which was then still second class. He was then selected in the 1980 NHL Entry Draft in the ninth round as a total of 173 players by the Washington Capitals . Initially, however, the defender stayed in his Swedish homeland and played from 1980 to 1983 for IF Björklöven in the Elitserien , with whom he was runner-up in the 1981/82 season. In the summer of 1983 he was summoned to North America by the Washington Capitals and played for the Capitals in the National Hockey League for the next three years , in the 1984/85 season he was also in the American Hockey League for their farm team , the Binghamton Rangers , was used. On March 10, 1986, the left shooter was transferred to the Nordiques de Québec in exchange for a third-round vote for the NHL Entry Draft 1986 . By the end of the 1985/86 season he was in 14 games for the Nordiques in the NHL on the ice. He scored one goal and gave nine assists.

From 1986 to 1989 Andersson was under contract with his ex-club IF Björklöven in the Swedish Elitserien. With his team he first won the national championship title in the 1986/87 season , before becoming runner-up again with Björklöven the following year. The two-time Olympic participant spent the 1989/90 season in the Swiss National League A , in which he first played for EV Zug and then for EHC Kloten . The Swede last played from 1990 to 1995 at IF Björklöven, who had since been relegated to Division 1. Although he succeeded with the team in the 1992/93 season promotion to the Elitserien, but he could not prevent the immediate relegation. Following the 1994/95 season, he ended his active career at the age of 33.

From 2006 to 2008 Andersson was assistant coach of the U20 juniors of IF Björklöven in the junior league SuperElit. He then worked for two years as an assistant coach for the professional team of IF Björklöven in HockeyAllsvenskan . Between 2011 and 2013 he looked after the professional team at MODO Hockey as an assistant coach. He then worked as an assistant trainer at the SCL Tigers until 2015 . With the Tigers, he managed to climb out of the National League B in the first-class National League A .

International

For Sweden , Andersson took part in the junior division at the U18 European Junior Championships in 1980 and the U20 World Junior Championships in 1981 and 1982 . At senior level he was in the squad of his country at the World Championships in 1982 , 1983 , 1987 , 1989 , 1990 and 1991 , in the years 1984 , 1987 and 1991 at the Canada Cup , as well as the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary and 1992 in Albertville .
