Bedřich Ščerban (born May 31, 1964 in Jihlava , Czechoslovakia ) is a former Czech ice hockey player who has been the general manager of HC Dukla Jihlava since 2008 .
Career
Bedřich Ščerban began his career as an ice hockey player in his hometown in the youth department of ASD Dukla Jihlava , for whose senior team he was active between 1983 and 1991 in the first division , the highest Czechoslovak division. In the 1984/85 seasons and 1990/91 season he won the Czechoslovak championship with Dukla Jihlava . He himself was able to convince with nine goals and twelve assists in 51 games, especially in the 1990/91 season, and received the Zlatá hokejka as the best Czechoslovak ice hockey player. In addition, he was elected to the all-star team of the 1st division. The 1991/92 season spent the defender at Tappara Tampere from the Finnish SM-liiga . He then remained in Northern Europe and moved to the 1992/93 season for Brynäs IF in the Swedish Elitserien . With his new club he was Swedish champion straight away . In the 1994/95 season he was also runner-up with Brynäs. For the 1996/97 season , Ščerban returned to his homeland and initially ran for HC Petra Vsetín in the Czech Extraliga , which was founded in 1993 after the division of Czechoslovakia. However, he ended the season at his hometown club HC Dukla Jihlava, who also played in the Extraliga.
From 1997 to 2000, the three-time Olympic participant was under contract with the Moskitos Essen , with whom he initially took part in the second-rate ice hockey Bundesliga , before Ščerban was promoted to the German ice hockey league as the second division champion with Essen in the 1998/99 season . In this he was on the ice for Essen in the 1999/2000 season , but could not completely convince there in his first DEL year, so that he switched to the 2nd ice hockey Bundesliga at EHC Freiburg . With Freiburg he also rose as a second division champion in the DEL in the 2002/03 season . As with his first attempt in the DEL, he could not fully assert himself in the top German league in the 2003/04 season , so he only made 23 main round appearances. In the playdowns he lost with Freiburg to the Hanover Scorpions , which meant the direct relegation for the EHC. He started the 2004/05 season at HC Berounští Medvědi in the second Czech division . After only twelve completed games, Ščerban joined the league rivals SK Horácká Slavia Třebíč , where he spent the following two and a half years. The long-time national player last played for his home club Dukla Jihlava in the 2007/08 season , which in the meantime had also been relegated to the second-class first division. Due to a serious illness of Pfeiffer glandular fever , Ščerban ended his career at the age of 43 and acted as assistant coach for the rest of the season.
Since March 2008, Ščerban has been the general manager of Dukla Jihlava. On December 19, 2013 he was inducted into the Czech Ice Hockey Hall of Fame .
International
For Czechoslovakia , Ščerban took part in the world championships in 1987 , 1989 , 1990 , 1991 and 1992 . He also stood in the line-up of Czechoslovakia at the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary and 1992 in Albertville . In 1987 he also took part in the Canada Cup with his country . At the World Championships in 1987, 1989, 1990 and 1992, he and his team won the bronze medal as well as at the 1992 Winter Olympics.
For the Czech Republic he took part in the World Championships in 1993 , 1994 and 1995 . In addition, he was in his country's squad at the 1994 Winter Olympics in Lillehammer . At the 1993 World Cup he won the bronze medal with the Czech Republic.
