Risto Kurkinen (born January 21, 1963 in Jyväskylä ) is a former Finnish ice hockey player who played in his active time from 1981 to 1997 for JYP Jyväskylä and TuTo hockey in the SM-liiga and HV71 in the Elitserien .
Career
Risto Kurkinen began his career as an ice hockey player in his hometown in the youth department of JYP Jyväskylä , for whose professional team he first played from 1981 to 1985 in the I divisioona, the second Finnish division, and then after the promotion of his team for two years in the SM- liiga was active. In his first two seasons in the SM-liiga he was elected to their All-Star Team. In the 1985/86 season he also received the Jarmo Wasama commemorative trophy as SM-liiga rookie of the year and in the 1986/87 season the Aarne Honkavaara trophy as their top scorer. In the 1987 NHL Entry Draft , the winger was selected by the Pittsburgh Penguins in the fourth round as the 68th player . He then spent the 1987/88 season with Pittsburgh's farm team Muskegon Lumberjacks in the International Hockey League . For this he scored 39 scorer points in 40 games, including 17 goals.
For the 1988/89 season Kurkinen returned to JYP Jyväskylä in his hometown. In the first year after his return to JYP, he and his team were runner-up straight away. In the following season he was elected to the All-Star Team of the SM-liiga for the third time in his career. From 1990 to 1992 the Finnish international was under contract for the first time in other European countries and during this period he played for the HV71 in the Swedish Elitserien . In 83 games he scored a total of 77 scorer points, including 33 goals, for the team from Jönköping . He then ran in two more seasons for JYP Jyväskylä in the SM-liiga and in the 1994/95 season for its league rivals TuTo Hockey . For the 1995/96 season , the left shooter moved to EHC Lustenau from the Austrian ice hockey league . There he was able to convince with 51 points scorer in 32 games. He last played in the 1996/97 season for the EC in Hanover in the 1st League North , the second German division. He then ended his career at the age of 34.
Since the end of Risto Kurkinen's career, his hometown club JYP Jyväskylä has not given him jersey number 30 in honor of any other player.
International
For Finland , Kurkinen took part in the Junior World Championship in 1983 . In the senior sector, he was in his country's squad at the 1987 and 1991 World Championships .
