Alexander Valeryevich Sjomin ( Russian Александр Валерьевич Сёмин ; English transcription: Alexander Valeryevich Syomin ; born March 3, 1984 in Krasnoyarsk , Russian SFSR ) is a Russian ice hockey player , who in the course of his active career between 2002 and 2017, among other things, Capitals 701 , Carolina Hurricanes and Canadiens de Montréal as well as 306 for HK Lada Tolyatti , Chimik Moskowskaja Oblast , Torpedo Nizhny Novgorod and HK Metallurg Magnitogorsk in the top divisions of Russia on the position of left winger . Sjomin collected numerous medals, especially at international level, and between 2008 and 2012 was two world champions and one runner-up with the Russian national team . Since May 2018 he has been under contract with HK Vitjas in the Continental Hockey League .
Career
The 1.88 m tall winger began his career with HK Traktor Chelyabinsk in the second-rate Wysschaja Liga before he was selected ( drafted ) in the 2002 NHL Entry Draft as 13th in the first round by the Washington Capitals of the National Hockey League .
After the draft, however, Sjomin initially decided to stay in Russia and played for the HK Lada Tolyatti in the Super League for a season before he finally moved to North America. In the 2003/04 season , the right-shooter made his NHL debut for Washington. After he missed the flight to the last game of the season against the Pittsburgh Penguins , Sjomin also spent four games and the play-offs in the American Hockey League with the Portland Pirates , the farm team of the Washington Capitals.
During the NHL lockout 2004/05 Sjomin returned for 50 games to the HK Lada, where he began the following season. This second season in Russia had become necessary because Sjomin had to do two years of military service in the Russian army when he moved to Russia , which initially ruled out a return to the NHL. However, the HK Lada got into such great financial difficulties that Syomin had to be transferred to Chimik Moskovskaya Oblast , where he spent the remainder of the 2005/06 season.
For 2006/07 Alexander Sjomin returned to Washington, on October 5, 2006 he scored the Capitals' first goal of the season in the game against the New York Rangers .
After a total of seven seasons in Washington, Sjomin signed on July 26, 2012 a one-year contract worth seven million US dollars with the Carolina Hurricanes . After an extension, he was unable to agree on a new contract with the Hurricanes in July 2015, so he joined the Canadiens de Montréal as a free agent . There it was only used irregularly after the season opener, so that it was put on the waiver list in December 2015 . After no NHL team had selected him, the Canadiens and Sjomin decided amicably to terminate his contract early. A few days later he returned to his home country and signed a contract with HK Metallurg Magnitogorsk from the KHL. There he and the team won the Gagarin Cup in spring 2016 .
International
At the international level, Syomin celebrated numerous successes. In addition to appearances in the U18 and U20 teams of the Russian Federation, he took part in six world championships and two Olympic Winter Games with Sbornaja between 2003 and 2014 . The Sjomin won two gold and one silver and one bronze medal in the world championships.
