Ken Lum

Ken Lum (born September 26, 1956 in Vancouver ) is a Canadian conceptual artist .

life and work

Lum initially studied natural sciences up to a bachelor's degree . After taking a course with Jeff Wall , he turned to conceptual art and completed a Master of Fine Arts at the University of British Columbia in 1985 , where he taught as a professor from 1990 to 2006. Between 1995 and 1997 he was visiting professor at the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts de Paris . From 2005 to 2007 Lum taught at Bard College and since then at the University of Pennsylvania School of Design in Philadelphia. Ken Lum is co-founder of the Yishu Journal of Contemporary Chinese Art In 2017, Ken Lum was awarded the Order of Canada .

Ken Lum often combines photographs with text, but also creates furniture sculptures and language paintings. Ken Lum is of Chinese origin. One of his topics is breaking up racial, gender and class related stereotypes. He asks the question of how we as viewers construct images of people who are different from ourselves. Lum worked several times with large mirrors with snapshots of people clamped into their frames. At Documenta11 2002, Lum exhibited Mirror Maze with 12 Signs of Depression . In 2006 the media installation Pi was opened in Vienna.

Ken Lum took part in numerous international exhibitions, including the biennials in Sydney (1992), Johannesburg (1997), São Paulo (1998), Havana and Shanghai (2000), Venice (2001), Istanbul (2007), Gwangju (2008), Moscow (2011) and the Whitney Biennale . In 2014 Lum was a participant in Documenta11 .
