Dawn Upshaw

Dawn Upshaw (born July 17, 1960 in Nashville , Tennessee ) is an American opera singer ( soprano ).

Life

Dawn Upshaw studied at Illinois Wesleyan University until 1982 . This was followed by two years of vocal training at the Manhattan School of Music . She made her debut in 1988 at the Metropolitan Opera in New York City . Her breakthrough came in 1992 at the Salzburg Festival as "Angel" in Olivier Messiaen's opera Saint François d'Assise and in a recording of Henryk Górecki's 3rd symphony .

Numerous composers, such as John Adams , Kaija Saariaho ( L'amour de loin ), Henri Dutilleux and Osvaldo Golijov , have written pieces for her, which she also premiered.

In 2010 she was commissioned to write the opera Vinkensport by the composer David T. Little for the Graduate Vocal Arts Program of the Bard College Conservatory of Music .
