Daniel Mendelsohn
Daniel Mendelsohn (born April 16, 1960 on Long Island , New York ) is an American journalist , translator and author .
Mendelsohn studied at the University of Virginia and Princeton University . He received his doctorate in 1994. He has worked as a critic for The New York Review of Books , New York Magazine , The New Yorker and The New York Times, among others . His first book was published in 1999 with the title The Elusive Embrace. He has translated the poems of Konstantinos Kavafis into English. Mendelsohn is openly gay .
Prizes and awards
Mendelsohn's books have won numerous awards, including the Duff Cooper Prize , the Prix Médicis, and the National Book Critics Circle Award in 2000, 2006, and 2012 .
He was elected to the American Philosophical Society in 2006 and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2012.
