Peter Serkin
Peter Adolf Serkin (born July 24, 1947 in Manhattan , New York City , New York - † February 1, 2020 in Red Hook , New York) was an American pianist of European descent. He was the son of the pianist Rudolf Serkin and grandson of the violinist Adolf Busch .
Life
Peter Serkin began his piano studies at the age of 11 at the Curtis Institute of Music . His teachers were initially Lee Luvisi , Mieczysław Horszowski and Rudolf Serkin. He later continued his studies with Ernst Oster , Marcel Moyse and Karl Ulrich Schnabel . Peter Serkin has performed with the leading symphony orchestras. He has also made a name for himself as a chamber music partner of Alexander Schneider , Yo-Yo Ma , Pamela Frank , Buell Neidlinger ( Basso Profundo ), the Guarneri String Quartet , the Budapest String Quartet and the Orion String Quartet . He was one of the founding members of the chamber music ensemble TASHI . Peter Serkin has taught at the Juilliard School and the Curtis Institute of Music, as well as summer classes at Tanglewood Music Center.
Important composers such as Hans Werner Henze , Peter Lieberson , Alexander Goehr , Luciano Berio , Oliver Knussen , Leon Kirchner and Toru Takemitsu have dedicated works to him. He was also involved in many world premieres and premieres of this and other composers.
