Mieczysław Horszowski (born June 23, 1892 in Lemberg , Galicia , † May 22, 1993 in Philadelphia ) was a Polish pianist .

Life

Horszowski began his career as a child prodigy at the end of the 19th century . He received his first piano lessons from his mother, a student of Karol Mikuli . Other teachers in Lviv were Henryk Melcer-Szczawiński and Mieczysław Sołtys . In 1899 he went to Vienna and studied there with Theodor Leschetizky until 1904 . He also took lessons from the German composer and music teacher Cyrill Kistler , who had met him in 1899 at a piano recital in Bad Kissingen. He made his official debut as a pianist in Vienna in 1902, as a soloist with orchestra in Warsaw with Beethoven's 1st Piano Concerto under Emil Młynarski . This was followed by tours of Europe with first appearances in Berlin, Paris, Rome and London, and his US debut took place in Carnegie Hall in 1906 .

Together with Pablo Casals (cello), whose companion Horszowski had been since 1906, he recorded several Beethoven pieces in the 1950s . Horszowski moved to Italy after the First World War , where he lived and taught until 1941. He then emigrated to the USA, where he taught at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia until his death . Until his 100th birthday he performed regularly in public in the USA and Europe. He gave his last concert at the age of 99 on October 31, 1991 in Philadelphia.

His standard repertoire included the piano works of Johann Sebastian Bach , Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart , Beethoven , Chopin and Schumann . But he also played contemporary works by Stravinsky , Szymanowski , Villa-Lobos and Shostakovich .
