Rhoda Levine

Rhoda Levine (* in New York City , USA ) is an American opera director, choreographer, children's book author and university teacher .

Life

Levine received a bachelor's degree from Bard College in Annandale-on-Hudson , New York . She has directed opera performances and other musical events in many national and international operas over the past few decades. She has directed several operas at Glimmerglass Opera in Cooperstown (New York) , Kentucky Opera in Louisville (Kentucky) and the Nederlandse Opera .

Levine has choreographed musical performances on Broadway , London's West End and other places. These include, for example, the world premieres of Viktor Ullmann's Der Kaiser von Atlantis, or the denial of death at the Chicago Opera Theater or the two operas by Anthony Davis X: The Life and Time of Malcolm X in 1985 at the New York City Opera or in 2007 by Wakondas Dream at Opera Omaha .

In Glyndebourne in 1985 Levine was the director of the world premiere of Where the Wild Things Are , a children's opera based on the model by Maurice Sendak with the music of the Scottish composer Oliver Knussen . The libretto of the opera Opus Number Zoo by the Italian composer Luciano Berio (originally 1951) from 1970 is by Levine. The opera was performed again in 1981 in a revised version in German, Italian and English with a wind quintet.

In 1996 Porgy and Bess was first performed at Cape Town Opera under her direction .

Levine currently resides in New York City, where she is the artistic director of the city's only improvised opera company , Play it by Ear Inc.

Teaching

Levine has taught acting and improvisation at the Curtis Institute of Music in Pittsburgh , Pennsylvania, the Yale School of Drama, the Juilliard School in New York City, and Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois . Since 1992 she has taught at the Manhattan School of Music , the Tisch School of the Arts and the Mannes College of Music , also in Manhattan .
