Benjamin Boretz (born October 3, 1934 ) is an American composer and music teacher, theorist and critic.

Boretz studied at Brandeis University and Princeton University with Milton Babbitt and Roger Sessions . He worked as a music critic for The Nation magazine and edited the Perspectives of New Music . He also taught at various universities. Meta-Variations is considered to be his main work on music theory. In his compositions, which are characterized by distinctive rhythmic and harmonic structures, he often uses electroacoustic and electronic instruments.
