Jacob Raphael Druckman (born June 26, 1928 in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania , † May 24, 1996 in New Haven , Connecticut ) was an American composer and music teacher.

Druckman had piano and violin lessons as a child and studied solfège, harmony and counterpoint with Louis Gesensway at the age of ten . He later took lessons from René Longby and at the age of fifteen worked as a composer and trumpeter in jazz ensembles. He attended a composition seminar by Aaron Copland in Tanglewood and studied from 1949 at the Juilliard School with Peter Mennin , Bernard Wagenaar and Vincent Persichetti . In 1953 he studied as a Fulbright scholar with Tony Aubin at the École Normale de Musique in Paris. In 1956 he obtained his master's degree at the Juilliard School, where he taught from 1957 to 1972. He also taught at Tanglewood and was a teacher at Bard College from 1961 to 1967 .

From 1965, Druckman worked at Columbia-Princeton Electronic Music Center , 1971-72 he was director of the studio for electronic music at Yale University , where he was rector of the music faculty and professor of composition in 1976. In 1982 he was Resident-In-Music at the American Academy in Rome and composer-in-residence of the New York Philharmonic Orchestra . He became a member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters (1978), President of the Fondation Koussevitzky (1980) of the Aaron Copland Fund for Music (1991).

Druckman composed orchestral and chamber music, vocal works and electroacoustic music, as well as drama, film and dance music. He was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for his work Windows for Large Orchestra (1972) . His works have been performed by major American and international orchestras (including the Chicago Symphony Orchestra , the New York Philharmonic Orchestra and the Philadelphia Orchestra ) and earned him awards such as the Thorne Foundation Award (1972), two Guggenheim Fellowships (1957 and 1968) and the Publication Award of the Society for the Publication of American Music (1967).
