Vincent Persichetti

Vincent Ludwig Persichetti (born June 6, 1915 in Philadelphia , † August 14, 1987 in Philadelphia) was an American composer , music teacher and conductor .

Life

He received piano lessons at the age of five . A little later he learned organ , double bass and tuba as well as music theory and composition . At the age of eleven, he took up opportunities to improve his own musical training and playing style. At the age of 16 he became the organist and choirmaster of the Arch Street Presbyterian Church in Philadelphia, and held that position for about 20 years. He attended Combs College of Music , where he studied composition with Russel King Miller . At the age of 20, he was head of the music theory and composition class at the Combs College of Music , studied conducting with Fritz Reiner at the Curtis Institute of Music and piano with Olga Samaroff-Stokowski at the Philadelphia Conservatory . He also completed his composition studies with Paul Nurdoff and Roy Harris .

From 1941 to 1947 was a professor at the Philadelphia Conservatory and headed the composition department. In 1947 he moved to the Juilliard School of Music in New York City , where he headed the composition department from 1963. He has also worked as a visiting professor at universities in Great Britain and Japan .

He is considered a great organ interpreter and improviser. He composed 9 organ works as well as 9 harpsichord works. His compositions as well as his music-writing works received worldwide attention. His compositions have received numerous national and international prizes and awards. In 1965 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Letters .
