Carsten Wilfried Spohr (born December 16, 1966 in Wanne-Eickel ) is chairman of the board and CEO of Deutsche Lufthansa AG, as well as chairman of the board of IATA.

Life

After completing his degree in industrial engineering at what was then the University of Karlsruhe , Carsten Spohr acquired a commercial pilot's license at the Lufthansa Commercial Aviation School in Bremen and at the Airline Training Center Arizona . Following this, in 1994 he completed the trainee program at Deutsche Aerospace AG, Munich, as a member of the central junior research group .

In October 1994 Carsten Spohr returned to Lufthansa and initially took over the management of central personnel marketing. From 1995 to 1998 he worked as a consultant to the Chairman of the Board of Management Jürgen Weber , until in August 1998, as Head of Regional Partner Management, he took over responsibility for Lufthansa's regional partnerships in Europe. In February 2000, Carsten Spohr was appointed head of Allianz management at Deutsche Lufthansa. In this function he was responsible for the management and coordination of Lufthansa's global cooperation partners, including the Star Alliance and regional partners. In addition, in July 2003 he took on responsibility for the Passenger Airlines strategy and the passenger holdings of Deutsche Lufthansa.

In October 2004, Spohr was appointed to the divisional board of the Lufthansa Passenger Airlines. His area of ​​responsibility included cabin crew, hub management and personnel management for the Lufthansa passenger airlines.

The Supervisory Board of Lufthansa Cargo AG appointed Carsten Spohr as Chairman of the Executive Board of Lufthansa Cargo AG with effect from January 15, 2007. On January 1, 2011, he moved to the Lufthansa Executive Board, where he took over the management of the Passenger Airlines division and the Chairman of the Passenger Board. On May 1, 2014, he took over from Christoph Franz as CEO of Deutsche Lufthansa AG. His executive board mandate at Lufthansa was extended by another five years on March 14, 2018 until December 2023. Spohr is also a member of various supervisory and advisory boards. After Air Berlin filed for bankruptcy in August 2017 , Spohr, as CEO of the competing Lufthansa, played a key role in the negotiations for the takeover of parts of the airline.

Carsten Spohr is still the owner of the captain's license for the aircraft types of the Airbus A320 family. He is married and has two daughters.

Controversy surrounding the crash of Germanwings flight 9525

Spohr was praised by the German media for the crisis management after the crash of Germanwings flight 9525 on March 24, 2015. However, four months after the crash, Spohr was criticized by relatives of the victims because “during checks, the note on the copilot's previous illness was not observed, and after the accident, Lufthansa decided against a four-eyes principle in the cockpit and no apology on the part of Spohr. ”According to Lufthansa, however, Spohr“ acknowledged his responsibility for the accident from the very first day - and apologized for the suffering that the disaster brought on the families. ”In addition, the airlines in the Lufthansa Group had shortly after the accident, the two-person rule was introduced in cockpits.
