Christoph Franz (born May 2, 1960 in Frankfurt am Main ) is a German - Swiss manager . From January 1, 2011 to April 30, 2014 he was CEO of Deutsche Lufthansa AG . Since March 2014, he has been Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Swiss pharmaceutical company Roche .

Life

Franz studied as a fellow of studienstiftung at the Technical University of Darmstadt Industrial Engineering and completed the study as a Doctor of Economics and Social Sciences (Dr. rer. Pol.) From. In 1990 he joined Deutsche Lufthansa, where he worked on projects for strategy, sales and controlling. From 1992 to 1994 he worked on the staff of the then CEO Jürgen Weber .

In 1994, Franz moved to Deutsche Bahn AG . On September 24, 1999, with effect from October 1, 1999, he was appointed CEO of DB Reise & Touristik by the Supervisory Board of Deutsche Bahn AG . He replaced Axel Nawrocki in this function. At the same time, he became a member of the Deutsche Bahn AG executive board. Before that, Franz was Head of Corporate Development . After the failure of the new price system , for which he had strongly advocated, he was released from his duties at the Supervisory Board meeting on May 20, 2003. Karl-Friedrich Rausch was appointed as his successor in his function . Deutsche Bahn cited different views on how the difficulties of the price system could be resolved as the reason for the replacement.

Franz was appointed Chairman of the Management Board on July 1, 2004 by the Board of Directors of Swiss International Air Lines . After the successful restructuring of Swiss, Franz was appointed deputy group board member from May 2009. He took over the passenger area from June 2009. On January 1, 2011, he took up the post of CEO of Lufthansa as successor to Wolfgang Mayrhuber in order to bring Lufthansa on a sustainable profit path. During his tenure he has the austerity program score launched, with the operating result is to be improved by 1.5 billion euros from 2015 onwards.

Franz announced on September 16, 2013 that he was not available to extend his contract, which ended on May 31, 2014. The Swiss pharmaceutical company Hoffmann-La Roche announced on the same day that the Board of Directors would propose Franz as the new Chairman of the Board of Directors at the Annual General Meeting on March 4, 2014, succeeding Franz B. Humer . Franz has been a member of the Board of Directors since 2011. As a reason for not wanting to extend his Executive Board employment contract at Deutsche Lufthansa AG, which expired in May 2014, Franz stated that he was particularly fascinated by being able to take on a new professional challenge at Roche. Franz handed over his office at Lufthansa to Carsten Spohr on May 1, 2014 . From June 11th to 14th, 2015 he took part in the 63rd Bilderberg Conference in Telfs- Buchen in Austria .

Private

Franz is married, has five children and lives in Zug .
