The TUM School of Management is the business administration faculty of the Technical University of Munich and the third business administration faculty in Germany which has a triple crown accreditation. With currently around 5000 students and 42 professors, it is the second largest faculty at the Technical University of Munich after the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering . Research and teaching focus on innovation & entrepreneurship , marketing , strategy & leadership , operations & supply chain management , finance & accounting and economics & policy .

History of the faculty

Before the faculty was founded, the range of courses at the Technical University of Munich was covered by six professors until 2001. Dieter Gernert (from 1978), Horst Wildemann (from 1989), Ralf Reichwald (from 1990) and Wolfgang Lück (from 1993) taught in the field of business administration, and Franz Holzheu (from 1977) and Wulfdiether Zippel (from 1980) in the field of economics . The faculty was founded in 2002 as a faculty for economics on the main campus of the Technical University of Munich. Since then, the number of professors has risen sharply. From 2002 to 2005 Ralf Reichwald and from 2005 to 2010 Christoph Kaserer was dean of the faculty. The current dean has been Gunther Friedl since 2010 .

research

The TUM School of Management is one of the strongest research faculties for business administration in Germany. In rankings, it is regularly one of the best economics in the world. In 2019 the TUM School of Management was ranked 20th and in Germany only after WHU . In the Times Higher Education Ranking 2020, the business faculty ranks 62nd worldwide. The TUM School of Management is part of the research network Quantitative Techniques for Economics and Management (QTEM). Research centers were set up to structure research activities:

  • LSM - Center for Life Sciences and Management (Grunow, Akkermann, Roosen, Belz, Moog)
  • CEM - Center for Energy Markets (Wozabal, Schwenen, Friedl, Kaserer)
  • CEFS - Center for Entrepreneurial and Financial Studies (Achleitner, Kaserer, Braun)
  • ERI - Entrepreneurship Research Institute (Patzelt, Alexy, Breugst, Milanov)
  • Competence center Industry 4.0 (Wildemann, Peus, Welpe, Friedl)
  • CDTM - Center for Digital Technology and Management (20 professors, together with Ludwig Maximilians University )

Teaching

The faculty offers a bachelor's and four master’s degree in business administration with links to technical degree programs. The Master in Consumer Science is unique in Germany. Around 20 percent of the students at the TUM School of Management come from abroad. A double degree with HEC Paris is offered for the Master in Management & Innovation .

To increase flexibility, the previous courses of study TUM-BWL, TUM-WiTec and TUM- WIN were combined in a Bachelor course in 2017 . Students can specialize in the business administration (major) subject in accordance with the five departments. The technology-oriented specialization (minor) is possible in cooperation with other TUM faculties in the following areas:

The consecutive Master’s degree in Management & Technology (“TUM-BWL”) is a master’s degree. The technical specializations are identical. In the field of business administration, the specializations Energy Markets and Life Science Management are also offered. In addition, the following specializations are offered at the Heilbronn location for the master's degree in "Management":

Executive MBA in Business & IT as well as in Innovation & Business Creation are offered to people already in professional life.

Graduate Center

The Graduate Center of the TUM School of Management was officially opened as one of the first TUM Graduate Centers as part of the TUM Graduate School. The aim of the Faculty Graduate Center is the advanced training and networking of the doctoral students, as far as this cannot be done directly by the supervising professors.

Corporate partner program

The TUM School of Management promotes economic and scientific networking with companies. 50 companies are integrated in the corporate partner program, which gives them access to the faculty's internal talent pool (around 2000 students) and can place job offers. In addition, corporate partners are included in faculty events, have the opportunity to hold guest lectures and are preferred for project studies and theses.
