University of Applied Sciences (Switzerland)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Fachhochschule ( FH ) is a type of university that conducts teaching and research on a scientific basis with an application-oriented focus.

University of Applied Sciences / Haute école spécialisée / Scuola universitaria professionale

For a long time, the Higher Business and Administration School (HWV), the Higher Technical College (HTL, Engineering School, or Technikum for short) and the Higher Technical Schools for Design (HFG) were the only possible higher (“academic”) further training after an apprenticeship . With the Federal Law on Universities of Applied Sciences , which came into force on October 6, 1995 , these around 70 higher technical schools were merged into 7 (organizational) technical colleges ( French Haute école spécialisée HES, Italian Scuola universitaria professionale ). Today (2005) there is intensive discussion in various technical college circles about reducing the number of technical college institutions to around 30 to 40.

Requirements and qualifications

The prerequisite for studying at a university of applied sciences is a completed apprenticeship with a vocational diploma or a completed high school diploma with a year of practical experience in the relevant area. For many FH degree programs - assuming an apprenticeship qualification - admission can also be achieved by passing an entrance examination that corresponds to the level of the professional matura. In addition to the general requirements, certain courses also require the passing of a course-specific aptitude test. The completion of a higher technical school or higher technical examination also enables access to the technical college.

As a result of the integration into the Bologna process , bachelor's courses were launched for the first time at Swiss universities of applied sciences in autumn 2005 . Individual master’s courses were introduced, most of which have been available since autumn 2008. Until then, the title of an engineer FH or the name of the course with a FH in the back was awarded. No deadline has been set for the subsequent acquisition of the technical college title. The previous legal titles remain protected even after the switch to the Bachelor-Master system. Owner altrechtlicher diplomas may since 1 January 2009 also bear the corresponding Bachelor title.
