Michael Borchard (* 1967 in Munich ) is a German journalist and political scientist. He worked as a speechwriter for the former Federal Chancellor Helmut Kohl and the Thuringian Prime Minister Bernhard Vogel . From 2003 to 2014 he was head of the Politics and Consulting Department of the Konrad Adenauer Foundation in Berlin. He then moved to Israel as head of the foundation's international office .

Life

From 1989 to 1994 Borchard studied political science , modern history and public law at the University of Bonn , supported by a gifted scholarship from the CDU- affiliated Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS). In 1995 he received a graduate grant from the Konrad Adenauer Foundation. From 1995 he worked as a freelance journalist, then as a research associate in the edition group "Documents on Germany Policy" at the Federal Archives in Sankt Augustin near Bonn. In 1998, even before his doctorate, he became a freelancer in the Politics department of the Federal Chancellery and became a member of the speechwriting team for Federal Chancellor Kohl.

In 1998 he received his doctorate under Hans-Peter Schwarz Dr. phil. with a thesis on the German prisoners of war in the Soviet Union. In the same year he received the Geffrub Prize of the Society of Friends and Patrons of the University of Bonn.

From 1998 to 2003 he worked as head of the speeches, text documentation, questions of social change department of the public relations department in the Thuringian State Chancellery and was speechwriter for the Thuringian Prime Minister Bernhard Vogel . In 2003 he moved to KAS as head of the domestic policy working group in the Politics and Consulting department, as well as head of the cross-departmental lead project Basics and Goals of Civil Society. In December of the same year he became Head of Politics and Consulting at the KAS, which he remained until 2014. He then took over the office of the Konrad Adenauer Foundation in Israel . From October 2017 he was deputy head of the main department Scientific Services / Archives for Christian Democratic Politics , which he has headed since July 1, 2018.

Borchard has been a member of the Catholic student association KDStV Bavaria Bonn since 1989 .
