Wolfgang Strengmann-Kuhn (born May 20, 1964 in Dinslaken ) is a German politician ( Alliance 90 / The Greens ). He is an economist and a member of the German Bundestag .

Life and work

Wolfgang Strengmann-Kuhn is the son of a steel cooker and grew up in the Ruhr area. After graduating from high school , Strengmann-Kuhn studied economics at Bielefeld University , graduating in 1992 with a degree in economics. He then worked from 1993 to 1995 as a research assistant at the Faculty of Sociology at Bielefeld University , from 1995 to 2000 at the Faculty of Economics at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main and from 2001 to 2003 at the Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences at the university Hohenheim .

Wolfgang Strengmann-Kuhn is married and has two children.

In 2002 Wolfgang Strengmann-Kuhn received his doctorate as Dr. rer. pole. at the University of Frankfurt am Main with the work Poverty Despite Employment - Analyzes and Sociopolitical Consequences . For this dissertation he received the research award from the Josef Popper Nutrition Foundation .

In the winter semesters 2000/01, 2002/03 and 2003/04 Strengmann-Kuhn was a lecturer for social policy and from 2004 to 2006 scientific assistant in the economics department of the Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main. There he completed his habilitation in 2006 with the work Essays on Poverty and Income Using a Life-Cycle Perspective . Since then he has been a private lecturer and from 2007 to 2008 he was also a deputy professor for Labor Economics at the University of Frankfurt.

It is a member of the Social Policy Committee of the Verein für Socialpolitik , the International Association for Research on Income and Wealth (IARIW) and the European Institute for Social Security (EISS).

Political party

Wolfgang Strengmann-Kuhn joined the Greens in 1981 . The peace movement, the anti-nuclear movement and the debate about the limits to growth had led him to the Greens. From 2000 to 2002, Wolfgang Strengmann-Kuhn was a member of the spokesman's council of BasisGrün , initiator of the discussion series of the Frankfurt Greens “The Green Table” in Club Voltaire and from 2002 to 2006 spokesman for the State Working Group on Social Policy of the Hessian Greens.

He is involved in the Green Basic Income Network and from 2011 to 2012 was a member of the future forum “Answers to a society that is falling apart” at the federal board of Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen .

Wolfgang Strengmann-Kuhn was the Hessian member of the German Bundestag for the Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen parliamentary group from January 4, 2008 to 2013 . He moved up for the resigned MP Margareta Wolf via the state list of Hesse and became spokesman for foreign trade policy , full member of the economic committee, deputy member of the committee for economic cooperation and development and the subcommittee on "Globalization and Foreign Trade".

In the 2009 Bundestag election he was able to move into parliament again via the state list and took over the office of spokesman for pension policy for the green parliamentary group. He became a member of the Labor and Social Affairs Committee and the Petitions Committee.

Wolfgang Strengmann-Kuhn has long been campaigning for the introduction of citizens' insurance in all branches of social security and the introduction of an unconditional basic income . He was in charge of developing the concept of the Green Guarantee Pension for the parliamentary group .

For the federal election 2013 , Wolfgang Strengmann-Kuhn ran on the list position 6 of the Hessian Greens and as a direct candidate in the Offenbach constituency . Due to the election results of his party, he was unable to win a mandate from the state list. At the end of January 2014, he moved back into the Bundestag as a replacement for Priska Hinz . Wolfgang Strengmann-Kuhn is now the spokesman for social policy in his group, a member of the European Committee and a deputy member of the Committee for Labor and Social Affairs.

On the list position 4 of the Hessian Greens, he won another mandate as a member of the German Bundestag in the 2017 federal election.

He is active in the scientific advisory board of the Basic Income Network , member of the German organization of the Basic Income Earth Network ( BIEN ) for an unconditional basic income . He is a member of the board of trustees of the Institut Solidarische Moderne and of the advisory board of the Institute for New Social Answers (INSA). He is also a member of the Frankfurt Poverty Research Working Group. He is a member of the ver.di union .
