Alpina B10 was the designation for several passenger car models built in small series from 1985 to 2003 by the German automobile manufacturer Alpina in the upper middle class and luxury class . All cars were based on the BMW 5 and 6 series models of the time and, as is customary with Alpina, were given their own model number.

The second model appeared in 1988, the third model in 1998. From February 2005, the successor Alpina B5 based on the BMW E60 / E61 was produced.

In 1985 Alpina launched the B10 3.5 based on the BMW 535i (E28) and the B10 3.5 Coupé based on the BMW 635 CSi (E24) . The B10 3.5 Coupe was the only version of the B10 that wasn't based on a 5-series BMW.

The 3.5-liter six-cylinder engine was reworked and its output increased from 136 kW to 192 kW. Only 77 units of the B10 3.5 and 44 units of the B10 3.5 Coupé were produced. A planned successor version of the B10 3.5 Coupé with catalytic converter was never built.

The second generation of the Alpina B10 was based on the BMW E34 , depending on the engine version on the BMW 525ix, 535i or 540i. From 1988 to 1996, 1215 copies were built as sedan and touring versions.

The car was available in five versions.

B10 3.5 / 1

At the time of launch, this was the only version of the B10 available. The 3.5-liter in-line six-cylinder in the BMW 535i was redesigned and now developed 187 kW (254 hp) instead of 155 kW (211 hp). In 1992 production was stopped after 572 copies.

B10 biturbo

The engine of the world's most powerful series sedan at the time also came from the BMW 535i and had 2 Garrett T25 turbochargers. This increased the output from 155 kW (211 hp) to 265 kW (360 hp). 507 vehicles were produced from August 1989 to March 1994.

B10 4.0

In April 1993, Alpina launched the first B10 with an eight-cylinder engine. For this purpose, the engine of the BMW 540i was modified, the output was increased from 210 kW (286 PS) to 232 kW (315 PS). 45 copies had rolled off the production line by August 1995.

B10 3.0 all-wheel drive

This version was based on the BMW 525ix, from October 1993 64 copies were produced. The displacement of the in-line six-cylinder with single VANOS and four-valve technology has been increased from 2.5 liters to 3.0 liters, and the output has been increased from 141 kW (192 PS) to 170 kW (231 PS) by means of a different engine management system .

B10 4.6

This model replaced the B10 Biturbo from March 1994. The engine block of the BMW 540i was drilled out to achieve a displacement of 4.6 liters. With 250 kW (340 PS) the performance was just below the B10 Bi-Turbo, 27 vehicles were produced.

Alpina B10 Touring

The third generation of the Alpina B10 was built as a sedan and touring based on the BMW E39 from January 1997 to October 2003.

In February 2000 Alpina presented the Alpina D10 , the first six-cylinder diesel model produced by Alpina based on the B10. The engine, a 3.0-liter biturbo with 180 kW (245 PS) and 500  Nm torque, was based on the engine of the BMW 530d.

engine

The third model generation of the B10 was built with both in-line six-cylinder and V8 engines.

The six-cylinder engines with 3.2 and 3.3 liters displacement were based on the engines of the BMW 528i and BMW 530i. In the 3.3 liter engine, the engine block was drilled out, which made it possible to increase the displacement to 3298 cm³. For this purpose, the cylinder head was machined and a modified crankshaft, as well as different pistons and camshafts were used. A modified intake system enabled a higher air throughput, and the vehicles also had a stainless steel exhaust system (Alpina-Bosal) with metal catalysts . The engine management was completely revised, which increased the output to 206 kW (280 PS).

The two V8 engines with 4.6 (B10 V8) and 4.8 liter displacement (B10 V8 S) come from the BMW 540i. Here, too, a larger displacement was achieved by drilling out the engine block, which, together with other modifications, increased the output to 250 kW (340 hp), then 255 kW (347 hp) for the 4.6-liter engine and 276 kW (375 hp) for the 4.8 liter engine increased.

Chassis and brakes

The chassis was revised, for this purpose the vehicle was lowered with modified springs and made tighter with shock absorbers from Sachs. The braking system was taken from a BMW E39 with a V8 engine, later from the E39 facelift model.
