Successor: M 113

The M 119 is a gasoline engine from Mercedes-Benz with eight cylinders in V-position and four valves per cylinder. It was used from 1989 to 1999 in various Mercedes cars in the upper and upper middle class .

It is based on the predecessor engines M 116 and M 117 and differs from these mainly in the four-valve cylinder head with two chain-driven overhead camshafts per cylinder bank, which actuate the valves via bucket tappets with hydraulic valve clearance compensation. It has a two-stage phase adjustment of the intake camshafts. There was the M 119 with displacements of 4.2 liters (4196 cm³) and 5.0 liters (4973 cm³) as standard and with 6.0 liters (5956 cm³) and 6.3 liters (6298 cm³) as tuning variants .

He first came in 1989 in the model 500 SL series R 129 on the market, and later in the 124 series , in the S-Class 140 series and E-Class 210 series .

The 4.2-liter variant had an output of 200 to 210 kW, depending on the version, and the 5.0-liter variant 235 to 240 kW.

The successor was the M 113 , which was developed together with the technically related M 112 V6 engine .

Origin and development

The then independent tuning company AMG , which specialized in Mercedes vehicles, relied on the 5.6-liter versions of the predecessor engine M117, developed in-house at the end of the 1980s, with which the engines developed 265 to 280 kW under high compression. These engines received the identification M117 / 9 from AMG. The successor engine family M119 of the two-valve M116 / M117 series developed by Daimler-Benz then also received four valves per cylinder. Many connoisseurs consider the M119 engines to be the best V8 engines that Daimler-Benz has ever used in passenger cars.
