Career as a club coach

Lönnstöm began his coaching career at the age of 18 as a youth coach for FC Futura in Finland. After successfully obtaining the UEFA A license in 1998, he worked for various clubs as a coach and technical director. For the longest time at MYPA in the Veikkausliiga . Lönnström is now in possession of the UEFA Pro license ( DFB : football teacher).

In May 2012 he moved to Thailand , where he became the academy director and assistant coach of Roi Et United . A year later he was promoted to head coach.

In his first season he was able to celebrate promotion to the Thai Premier League Division 1 , the second highest division in Thailand. In April 2014 he left Roi Et United to take over as head coach of the Thai Premier League club Police United . He became the first Finnish football coach to take over a team from a top Asian league.

Together with his German assistant coach Michael Cikos, he took over the team after nine match days, with seven points in 17th place in the table. In the following nine games under the leadership of the coaching team 16 points were scored. The Police United team had improved to 12th place. Nevertheless, the entire coaching staff was sacked at the end of June 2014 under controversial circumstances.

Then Lönnström joined the most successful club in the Maldives in August 2014 . There he signed a contract with New Radiant SC which ran until the end of 2015. Mika Lönnström was immediately successful and at the end of the season won the double from the Dhivehi League Championship and the Presidents Cup. He was then voted Coach of the Year in the Maldives. By winning the championship, the Blues, nickname of the team, qualified for the AFC Cup . After a 4-1 away defeat against Persib Bandung from the Indonesia Super League in the AFC Cup, the contract was canceled by mutual agreement.

In April 2015, Lönnström returned to Thailand, where he took over the Thai Premier League club Gulf Saraburi FC. The promoted team was at the bottom of the table at this point. After only 5 competitive games, Lönnström surprisingly canceled his contract with immediate effect.

He opened a completely new chapter in July 2015 when he signed with Maji Maji FC from the Premier League (Tanzania) . Lönnström led the promoted team to two wins from the first two games. During the winter break, the Songea team had 11 points from 10 games and thus secured a secure midfield position. After some difficulties and disagreements off the field, the contract was terminated at Lönnström's request.

Since then he has concentrated on building up and working on The MnM coaching. This is a service company he co-founded, which consists of a multicultural group of trainers and has set itself the goal of improving the quality of training around the world.
