history
Between 1905 and 1907 the place and its surroundings were one of the focal points of the Maji-Maji War in German East Africa .
Sub -king ( nduna ) Songea, after whom the settlement and later city of Songea is named, was next to Chabruma the first leader of the Ngoni (see under Nguni ) who joined the Maji-Maji freedom movement. The freedom hero was injured, captured and hanged on February 27, 1906 with others by members of a unit of German marine infantry under Major Johannes .

The city is the seat of a Catholic archbishop.
About 20 km from Songea is the town of Peramiho , with the Abbey of the Missionary Benedictines and the Priory of the Missionary Benedictine Sisters. Some of their projects are jointly financed by donors and foundations, including the PATRIZIA KinderHaus Foundation , which in 2002 supported the construction of a new children's ward in the Mission's hospital in Peramiho.
