Divina Mary Galica (born August 13, 1944 in Bushey Heath , Hertfordshire , England ) is a former British athlete. In the late 1960s and early 1970s she was the most successful female ski racer in Great Britain. She then started a successful career as a racing driver .

biography

Galica first took part in the Olympic Winter Games in Innsbruck in 1964 at the age of 19 . The breakthrough to the expanded world class came four years later. Between 1968 and 1971 she was among the top ten in 15 World Cup races , almost all of them downhill and giant slalom. She made it onto the podium twice with third places. With an eighth place in the giant slalom at the 1968 Winter Olympics in Grenoble and a seventh in the giant slalom in Sapporo in 1972, she consolidated her position as one of the most successful runners in the history of British skiing.

Shortly after retiring from the British national ski team, Galica was invited to a celebrity car race. Her obvious talent led her to develop a second career as a motor sportsperson. Galica competed in various kart , sports car and truck races. In 1976 she even made her Formula 1 debut as the fourth driver of the British Surtees - Ford team at the British Grand Prix , but failed in qualifying. Two more attempts followed in 1978 as a driver in the team of the eccentric Lord Alexander Hesketh . After two missed qualifications at the start of the season, she was replaced by Eddie Cheever .

Today Galica works as vice-president of the former Formula 1 driver Skip Barber launched Racing School . Because of her sporting success she was accepted into the Order of the British Empire .
