Coupe Georges Boillot

Henri-Julien Marie Matthys (born September 1884 in Schaerbeek , † 30 August 1925 in Boulogne-sur-Mer ) was a Belgian entrepreneur and racing driver .

Racing career

Henri-Julien Matthys was an industrialist and competed as a gentleman’s driver in car races with Bignan racing cars in the 1920s . He started twice each in the 24-hour race of Le Mans and the 24-hour race of Spa-Francorchamps . Both Le Mans races ended prematurely due to technical defects in the vehicles. In Spa in 1925 he achieved his best position in a 24-hour race with fourth place overall .

In 1925 he had a serious accident at Coupe Georges Boillot , of which he died 15 days later. Matthys and his co-driver Paul Vauthier drove a 3-liter Bignan on the 37-kilometer circuit near Boulogne-sur-Mer . According to eyewitness reports, Matthys lost control of the car in the le Point du Jour section when he tried to avoid a spectator running across the route. The bignan came off the road, overturned, and went up in flames. While his passenger was still dying at the scene of the accident, Matthys was taken to a hospital, where he succumbed to serious injuries two weeks later.
