Mikhail Varshavski , better known as Doctor Mike , ( Russian Михаил Варшавский ; born November 12, 1989 in Saransk , Soviet Union ) is a Russian - American family doctor who, especially after his election as Sexiest Doctor Alive , uses his social media Channels gained great popularity.

Personal life and education

Varshavski was born in Saransk on November 12, 1989. His family is Jewish . His father was also a doctor in Russia, among other things in charge of the local police office. His mother was a professor of mathematics . Varshavski has an older sister named Dasha and three nephews named Daniel, Steven and Ari. In December 1995 the family emigrated to the United States; this was also Varshavski's first flight. Due to the financial circumstances, the family initially lived in a one-room apartment in Brooklyn . Since neither his parents' studies nor training were recognized in the USA, they had to start all over again. The father completed another medical degree, while the mother first looked after the children, then did floor cleaning for little money, but finally did her master's degree in mathematics again in the USA. He was nicknamed Doctor Mike while he was still in high school, as all of his friends would turn to him when they got injured in physical education, for example, because they knew his father was a doctor. It was clear to him early on that he wanted to follow in his father's footsteps. Helping people and building a connection with them, not only treating diseases, but also preventing them through a healthy lifestyle, were high on his agenda.

During his studies, he first lost his paternal grandparents at the end of 2009, a few months later his mother was diagnosed with leukemia, from which she died in December 2010. It was Doctor Mike who, in the presence of his sister and father, told the doctors to discontinue life support measures.

After his mother's death, Varshavski bought his family a husky, a female dog. He called her Roxy. One of his last conversations with his mother was about a family dog, which is why this was so important to him. In the pet shop, he had to choose between a black Labrador and a husky with ice-blue eyes, due to the color of the eyes and the similarity of these to his mother's eyes, he chose the husky. Vashavski moved back to his father for a time to support him, even though he was already living alone in Staten Island at that time . Since Roxy lives alternately with Varshavski's father and him, he also bought his own dog, a Newfoundland dog, named Bear, in 2018. Both Bear and Roxy have their own Instagram accounts .

Doctor Mike was in a relationship with Cynthia Olavarria, Miss Puerto Rico Universe 2005, Pia Wurtzbach , Miss Universe 2015, and the TV presenter Jennifer Lahmers. He is currently in a relationship with Cuban model Betsy Alvarez.

He completed his studies at the New York Institute of Technology . He took part in a seven-year program that combined life sciences and medicine . Varshavski is a general practitioner with correspondingly extensive training and has an additional qualification as an osteopath . Since 2014 he has been working for the Atlantic Health System Overlook Medical Center, currently in New Jersey , where he also obtained his license to practice medicine in family medicine .

Viral career

In 2012 Varshavski created an Instagram account to document his life as a medical student. Above all, it was important to him to show other medical students that it is also possible to have a life besides studying.

During school he described himself as shy and reserved, he could not speak in front of people and also did not dare to speak to girls. The book How to win Friends and Influence People by Dale Carnegie (in German: How do I win friends and influence people ) has helped him to get rid of these fears.

In 2015, the website BuzzFeed published an article about Varshavski and called it You Really Need to see this hot Doctor and his dog , in German: You must have seen this hot doctor and his dog . That same year, People Magazine named him Sexiest Doctor Alive in its Sexiest Man Alive issue . Shortly afterwards, the number of subscribers to his social media channels skyrocketed.

In 2015 he founded the Limitless Tomorrow Foundation , which takes care of scholarships for students. Among other things, he generated a large donation by raffling a date with him in cooperation with the Coffee Meets Bagel dating app . This date was worth nearly $ 91,000.

As of April 2020, his YouTube channel had over 5.56 million subscribers, to whom he brings the world of medicine, but above all healthy living, closer to them every Wednesday ( Wednesday Check-Up ) and Sunday. His Instagram channel is just behind with 3.6 million subscribers. Bear (thebearpup) has 119,000 subscribers, Roxy (roxy.husky) 6,9000.
