European Women's Football Championship 1984 / France

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This article looks at the French national team at the 1984 European Women's Football Championship .

First round

A total of 16 national women registered for this first European Women's Championship organized by UEFA . These were initially divided into four groups of four according to geographical aspects, the winners of which then contested the semi-finals. The competition dragged on for almost two years from mid-1982; all pairings were played home and away, and unlike the later European Championships, there was no final tournament in a single country in 1984. That is why the first round or “group phase” is sometimes referred to as qualification , but also as preliminary round; from the competition, it corresponded to a quarter-finals.

The French were assigned to group 3, in which they caused Italy its only defeat, but awarded too many points against Portugal and Switzerland to qualify for the semi-finals.
