The 1979 automobile world championship was the 30th season of the automobile world championship, which is now known as the Formula 1 world championship . Over 15 races were held between January 21, 1979 and October 7, 1979, the drivers' world championship and the International Cup of Formula 1 Constructors .
Jody Scheckter won the drivers' championship for the first and only time. Ferrari was the sixth time constructor world champion.

News in brief Formula 1
- In Dijon , Renault , a turbo engine won for the first time in Formula 1.
- James Hunt resigned from active motorsport.
