Günther Steiner (2017)

Günther Steiner (born April 7, 1965 in Meran , South Tyrol ) is an Italian motorsport engineer and manager. He is currently the team boss of the Haas Formula 1 racing team . He previously worked at Red Bull and as Managing Director of Jaguar .

Career

World Rally Championship (1986-2001)

Steiner was born in Merano as the son of a butcher. He began to study engineering, but never finished his studies. After his military service he moved to Belgium , where he started his career as a mechanic in the World Rally Championship with the Mazda Rally Team. From 1989 to 1990 Steiner worked as an assistant team manager at Top Run Srl. Between 1991 and 1996 he worked as a technical manager at Jolly Club. In 1997, Steiner headed the Prodrive ’s Allstar Rallye Team and won the European World Rally Championship with Krzysztof Hołowczyc . In 1998 he was hired by M-Sport as a project manager. In 2000 he was promoted to head of engineering in the Ford World Rally Team, where he worked with drivers Colin McRae and Carlos Sainz .

Jaguar (2001-2003)

Steiner switched to Formula 1 in 2001 because Jaguar's team boss Niki Lauda wanted him as executive director. According to Steiner, Lauda asked 'whether there are talented people working at Ford' and they replied, 'There is Günther!' He became the engineer in charge of Milton Keynes .

Steiner restructured the team and reduced costs. Jaguar failed miserably in the 2002 season, however. Lauda was released on November 26th. On December 5, Jaguar announced that Steiner would be replaced by David Pitchforth. Jaguars' new management offered him another job on the team, but he turned it down. He spent the 2003 season on leave until he replaced Wiet Huidekoper as technical director at the Opel Performance Center in November of this year.

Red Bull (2005-2008)

After Red Bull bought Jaguar Racing in 2004, Steiner was offered to join the team. Since Opel wanted to withdraw from the DTM at the end of 2005, Steiner motivated himself to return to the Milton Keynes team. His job as technical operations manager was confirmed on January 13, 2005.

Steiner and team boss Christian Horner led the team to better results in the 2005 season , but when Red Bull hired McLaren's technical director Adrian Newey , team owner Dietrich Mateschitz turned to Steiner to set up a NASCAR team in the USA . Feeling the F1 team was overcrowded, Steiner consulted his wife and agreed to move to Mooresville , North Carolina , where he served as Team Red Bull technical director from April 1, 2006 to April 2008.

Haas F1 (2014–)

After leaving Red Bull, he stayed in Mooresville and started Fibreworks Composites in January 2009.

On April 14, 2014 it was officially announced that Günther Steiner will become the team manager of the new Haas F1 team .

Steiner has an Italian and American passport and lives in Mooresville with his wife Gertrud and daughter Greta.
