The company was founded in 2000 as a result of the merger of the two equal partners The Sumitomo Marine & Fire Insurance Co., Ltd. and Mitsui Marine & Fire Insurance Co., Ltd. founded. The company is traded on the Tokyo Stock Exchange under the symbol 8752.
The Mitsui Sumitomo Insurance Group merged with the insurance companies Aioi Insurance Co. Ltd. in 2008. and Nissay Dowa General Insurance Co. Ltd. the MS & AD Insurance Group .
