Banco Internacional do Funchal, SA (short form Banif , German: International Bank of Funchal) was a Portuguese universal bank . The bank, founded by Horácio Roque in 1988, was listed in both Euronext Lisbon and PSI 20 . In December 2015, it was sold by Banco de Portugal to Santander Totta, a Portuguese branch of the major Spanish bank Banco Santander for 150 million euros.

history

In 1988 the bank was founded as a joint stock company , on the initiative of a group of entrepreneurs and bankers around Horácio da Silva Roque . It succeeded the Funchal savings bank, the Caixa Económica do Funchal , which had accumulated liabilities of over 10 billion escudos (around 50 million euros today) and was dissolved.

In 1990 Banif completed the repayment of the debt it had assumed and expanded. In 1991 it had 20 branches in its home region, the Madeira archipelago , and eleven counters in continental Portugal. Since 1992 its shares have been traded on the Portuguese stock exchange, the Bolsa de Valores . In 1993, Banif also went abroad with the establishment of Banif - Banco Internacional do Funchal (Cayman), Ltd in George Town (Cayman Islands) . In 1994 the bank opened its Edifício Banif de José Malhoa building in Lisbon , which has since housed the operational center of Banif.

In 1996, Banif acquired the insurance company Companhia de Seguros Açoreana (German: Azorean Insurance Company) and the majority in the bank Banco Comercial dos Açores, founded in 1912 . This made it, in addition to its native Madeira archipelago, also the allfinance market leader in the Azores . The traditional business connections to the important emigration colonies, especially in Venezuela , Brazil , Canada , the USA and South Africa , subsequently facilitated the further internationalization of the bank. In 2001 she introduced her Internet banking , and in 2002 the previous Banif - Banco Internacional do Funchal was transformed into Banif SGPS, SA , a holding company for the companies of the group and its three sub-holdings Banif Comercial SGPS, SA (universal bank ), Banif Seguros SGPS , SA (insurance group), and Banif Investimentos SGPS, SA (investment).

2009 appeared Banif first time in the list of world's 500 most valuable banks, at No. 493 of the Global 500 Banking Brands Index of the magazine The Banker Magazine . In 2010 she was listed there in 389th place, in 2011 in 487th place. As a result of the general banking crisis and, in particular, the subsequent financial crisis in Portugal, Banif's results fell during these years, but its losses lagged behind those of many other credit institutions in Portugal. On March 21, 2011, Banif was included in the Portuguese PSI 20 share index for the first time . In view of its change from a small regional savings bank to a major financial group, the Banif has for some time now included the motto A força de acreditar (English: the power to believe in it) in its external presentation.

At the end of 2013, the following group companies were classified as "discontinued operations":

In 2013, 179 jobs were cut (end of year: 3,196) and 43 branches were closed (end of year: 387).

In 2014, 463 jobs were cut (−15%) and 72 branches were closed.

In June 2015, Banif sold the company Banif Mais to Cofidis Participations, SA, France, for 400 million euros.

On December 18, 2015, the Maltese subsidiary Banif Bank Malta was sold for 18.4 million euros.
