Location and economy
The community forms the western part of the Betuwe , the landscape between the Rhine and Waal , which owes its name to the Batavern . Rhenen and Wageningen are to the north of the community, across the Rhine .
The Tiel - Nijmegen railway (with small stations in Kesteren, Dodewaard and Opheusden) and the A15 Rotterdam –Tiel – Arnhem / Nijmegen motorway run through the municipality .
The Dodewaard nuclear power plant , which was shut down in 1997, is located in the village of Dodewaard . There are also several small industrial and trading companies (including a slaughterhouse), and especially in Opheusden there are many tree nurseries , a lot of fruit growing (apples, pears and cherries) and agriculture.
IJzendoorn has an alternate port for river navigation.
history
The area was already inhabited by bearers of the Vlaardingen culture in the Neolithic Age . Later there were settlements of the Romans and the Batavern allies with them .
- For the Roman past of the place see also the main article Carvo .
The area was uninhabited from the 3rd to the 10th century. After that people settled again, in the 14th century the better damming of the rivers enabled a significant increase in population.
In Dutch terms, the Reformation was going on here rather slowly. The last monastery closed its doors around 1620. The village of Opheusden is now considered extremely strictly Calvinist .
From 1672 to 1674 the area was occupied by the French, which rightly had devastating consequences. The 18th century saw improvements in tobacco growing and better farming practices, but then came a period of river flooding that left many of their belongings or even their lives.
Between 1870 and 1920 there was work in stone factories; However, when they went bankrupt and the increased water pollution in the Rhine made fishing impossible, the men of the Neder-Betuwe looked for work abroad, including a. in the Ruhr area .
The Second World War brought a lot of suffering and devastation, especially from September 1944, when the Betuwe was a no man's land between the warring parties, partly flooded.
After the liberation, the villages, u. a. thanks to Marshall's help, rebuilt. The fact that the rivers are still a danger for the Betuwe people became apparent when the dike near Ochten threatened to break in 1995 and all places had to be temporarily evacuated. Priority was given to improving the dikes.
