The Grützmachergraben is a moat in Spandau , Berlin . Running completely in the Haselhorst district , the ditch flows into the Spree on the right .

The upper course of the trench runs in a zigzag . This indicates a defunct rampart with lunettes (see Royal Powder Factory ).

The ditch begins a little north of Rhenaniastraße, as a drain from the broken pipe pond , crosses under the street and drains the broken pipe meadows. The pipe break pond is not registered for the beginning of the 1920s, rather the Grützmachergraben feeds itself from the entire pipe break and the trench turns west at its southern end. The wet meadows are a quarry of alder in the northwestern Haselhorst, on the southeastern edge of which is the allotment garden colony Haselbusch . The road was laid out by Rhenania-Ossa , a forerunner of Shell , as an access road to their property, on which a tank farm was built in 1927. It is currently the direct connection between Haselhorst and the water town of Oberhavel . At the end of the swamp, the ditch on the bezel bends sharply to the right in the direction of flow. At Adickesstraße the ditch bends again at right angles, this time to the left and crosses under Daumstraße .

Beavers live in the swamps at the origin of the ditch . The broken pipe meadows are now a visible biotope for these animals. The death of a total of ten beavers since 1999 by vehicles caused a discussion that went beyond the borders of Spandau. The beavers change over the Rhenaniastraße , the only land connection between the northern broken pipe meadows around the broken pipe pond and the southern broken pipe meadow, and the old Spandauer Schifffahrtskanal . Ultimately, in February 2007, Rhenaniastraße in the swamp area was completely closed to traffic at night. An exception has been made for bus line 139 of the BVG . On June 9, 2006, the maximum speed limit was reduced to 30 km / h and a warning sign was put up. For the future there are considerations to remove the barrier effect of the road structure by blocking or dismantling the Rhenaniastraße or building a small animal guidance system for beavers.

The Grabenwasser flows slightly meandering through the Grützmacherpark to Telegrafenweg . In this section, the moat is spanned by a footbridge. Then the Grützmachergraben goes almost in a straight line past an industrial park, cuts the site of the BMW motorcycle factory and crosses under the street at the Juliusturm .

The lower course behind the street at the Juliusturm is channeled dead straight with an artificially created flood plain. The section joins the Spree on the right, just before it joins the Havel.

The park, located in the eastern part of the Pulvermühle district, named after the former powder mill , is bordered by Daumstraße in the east, Goldbeckweg in the west and north and Telegrafenweg in the south. For this purpose, the Grützmachergraben was completely exposed and renatured . A hiking trail runs along the trench, partly on a steel structure, which is intended to prevent direct entry to ecologically important and difficult-to-pass areas. Benches and play areas for children and young people have been created on this page. The hiking trail following the ditch changes the side of the ditch over a grate bridge. One tree overgrown with ivy on each side of the trench was connected to the other with a crown safety rope (Cobra, 2 t). This should give the ivy the possibility of bridging a moat and thus give the bridge a natural roof. The measure failed. The rope hangs between the trees without any function.

On the left-hand side, a path runs through tree cover and past grassland and dry sand grass . In order to preserve this biotope, invasive neophytes , primarily the wild Robinia pseudoacacia , were removed. The park is intended to ensure the “near-residential green space supply for the Pulvermühle district ”. The park area is about three hectares .

The Daumstrasse Bridge is the first bridge over the Grützmachergraben. Designed as an arch bridge, the visible flanks of the bridge are paved with small stones . In the Grützmacherpark, the ditch is spanned by a pedestrian bridge built between 2000 and 2001. This has a span of 22 meters. Shortly after the island in the trench, the hiking trail leads to the other bank of the trench by means of a grating bridge. The road bridge Telegrafenweg / Grützmachergraben is an arch bridge under the roadway. The Telegrafenweg, which also has to be passed by heavy trucks , crosses the Grützmachergraben there.

Trench name

The Grützmachergraben, like the somewhat secluded Grützmacherweg, was probably named after the previous owner of the Haselhorst forest parcel and the associated estate.
