PCU John F. Kennedy (CVN-79) is a United States Navy aircraft carrier under construction since February 2011and the second Gerald R. Ford-class ship .
Namesake
John Fitzgerald Kennedy (1917–1963) was the 35th President of the United States of America . John F. Kennedy served as a naval officer during World War II and was in command of the PT speedboat PT-109 . CVN-79 is the third U.S. Navy ship named after a member of the Kennedy family. The aircraft carrier CV-67 carried the name John F. Kennedy from 1967 to 2007 .
Naming
Congressman Harry Mitchell proposed on December 7, 2007, the 66th anniversary of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, that the proposed CVN-79 aircraft carrier be named after the battleship USS Arizona sunk in Pearl Harbor . In 2009, Congressman John Shadegg proposed that the ship or subsequent aircraft carrier ( CVN-80 ) be named after US Senator Barry Goldwater from Arizona. On May 29, 2011, the US Department of Defense announced that the CVN-79 aircraft carrier would be named USS John F. Kennedy .
construction
On January 15, 2009, Northrop Grumman Shipbuilding was awarded a $ 374 million contract to design and prepare for John F. Kennedy . On February 25, 2011, the first steel plate for the new building was cut in a festive setting. The ceremony represented the formal start of construction of the John F. Kennedy .
