Maria Jotuni (born April 9, 1880 in Kuopio , † September 30, 1943 in Helsinki ) was a Finnish writer.

Life

Initially, Jotuni wrote novellas . A first collection was published in 1905. She then turned to dramas and comedies. In her works she often portrayed very strong women, which was in contrast to the image of women of her time. Her drama Miehen kylkiluu from 1914 was performed at the Finnish National Theater and aroused moral doubts even before the premiere, as the play addresses the hunt for men by women. In 1929, the drama was Lübeck on German listed.

In her plays she dealt with current issues, for example in 1918 she dealt with war speculators . Her 1924 work Tohvelisankarin rouva, in which marriage is portrayed as pathetic, was discussed at parliamentary level . There were calls for the National Theater to cancel its support due to the content of the play, which was perceived as immoral.

The last of her works was published in 1963, twenty years after her death, the novel Huojuva talo, which she wrote in the 1930s. In 1990 the novel, which again critically deals with marriage, was made into a film by Eija-Elina Bergholm .

Awards

In 1938 she received the Aleksis Kivi Prize . In 1980 the Finnish Post issued a postage stamp with her portrait.
