Belt Nightwalk

The Gürtel Nightwalk is a cultural event that has taken place every year since 1998 in pubs in the city ​​railway arches between Alser Strasse and Thaliastrasse on the Gürtel in Vienna .

history

The Gürtel Nightwalk was launched to strengthen the new Beisl scene that is establishing itself in the Stadtbahn arches and to make the Gürtel, with its negative image as a brothel mile, also known as a leisure mile.

The Gürtel Nightwalk was organized for the first time in 1998 by the local councilors Christian Oxonitsch , Kurt Stürzenbecher and Heinz Vettermann and held on August 22nd of the same year. In 2001 the councilor Nurten Yilmaz took the place of Christian Oxonitsch.

The event, which has taken place every year at the end of August since then, initially began with three bars and just as many open-air stages. By 2011, participation expanded to 16 bars and five open-air stages. In 2004, the roof of the newly built Vienna Main Library on Urban-Loritz-Platz was included in the Gürtel Nightwalk, where the event has been opening ever since.

In 2010 the “armadillo” was presented as a mascot for the first time. The white symbolic figure was designed by the artist Tomtschek .

program

The program of the event, which takes place during the evening and night hours, primarily offers a music program based on representatives of the local music scene, such as 3 Feet Smaller , Joyce Muniz , Kommando Elefant , Marilies Jagsch and Band and Zeronic . On the occasion of the 100th Women's Day in 2011, the cube Export designed by Valie Export and located in one of the tram arches was played with a DJane line by Municipal Department 57 - Promotion of Women and Coordination of Women's Affairs of the City of Vienna . The St. Balbach Volxkino shows films and the reading given by the initiators is already a tradition.

Visitors

The events from 1998 to 2007 were attended by around 250,000 guests. Due to the unfavorable weather conditions, around 15,000 people visited the Gürtel Nightwalk in 2009.
