Sam Schmidt (born August 15, 1964 in Lincoln , Nebraska ) is a retired American automobile racing driver , racing team owner and entrepreneur. From 1997 to 1999 he started 27 races of the Indy Racing League . Since 2001 he has owned the Schmidt Peterson Motorsports team , which competes in the IndyCar Series and the Indy Lights .

Career

After leaving school, Schmidt completed a course of study, which he completed with a “Master of Business Affairs” (MBA). Schmidt was working as an entrepreneur and took part in amateur races. In 1995, at the age of 31, he decided to enter professional motorsport as a racing driver. He first started in the USAR Hooters Pro Cup . A year later he competed in formula racing in the US F2000 National Championship . He finished his first season in fourth place in the championship.

In 1997 , Schmidt moved to the Indy Racing League (IRL). He started three Indy Racing League races for Blueprint Racing and LP Racing . A tenth place on his debut was his best result of the season. He was 27th in the drivers' championship. 1998 Schmidt started for LP Racing / PCI . After he was twice among the top ten drivers in the first two races of the season, eight less successful races followed. At the season finale at Las Vegas Motor Speedway , Schmidt finished second for the first time in an Indy Racing League race on the podium. In the overall ranking he was in 14th place. In his third Indy Racing League season , Schmidt drove for Treadway Racing . He finished six of the ten races and was always among the top ten drivers. After a third place in Fort Worth and a second place in Fountain , Schmidt won the Indy Racing League race in Las Vegas. With 233 points, he finished the season on the fifth championship course. He was 60 points behind the master Greg Ray .

In 2000 Schmidt was to contest his fourth Indy Racing League season. During test drives at Walt Disney World Speedway in Orlando , Schmidt had a serious accident. Schmidt has been paraplegic from the chest down since this accident .

In 2001, Schmidt founded the Sam Schmidt Motorsports racing team , which has been competing in the IndyCar Series (formerly Indy Racing League) since then. The team is also active in the Indy Lights . There, with Thiago Medeiros (2004), Jay Howard (2006), Alex Lloyd (2007), Jean Karl Vernay ( 2010 ), Josef Newgarden ( 2011 ) and Tristan Vautier ( 2012 ), a total of six drivers won the championship title. The racing team has been operating under the name Schmidt Peterson Motorsports since 2013 .

Others

After his accident, Schmidt founded the Sam Schmidt Paralysis Foundation , which is committed to research into healing options and treatments for paraplegia as well as improving the quality of life.
