AJ Foyt IV 2015

Anthony Joseph A. J. Foyt IV (born May 25, 1984 in Louisville, Kentucky) is a currently pausing American automobile racer who drove in the IndyCar Series from 2003 to 2010 . He is the grandson of US motorsport legend AJ Foyt .

Career

Foyt made his first appearance in the IndyCar Series in 2003 for his grandfather's AJ Foyt Enterprises team . On his 19th birthday, he competed in the 2003 Indy 500 , making him the youngest driver ever to compete there. Until the end of the 2005 season there were no major successes. In the championship he reached positions around 20th place, which earned him the reputation of sitting in the team's car solely because of his name. He was replaced by Jeff Bucknum for the two street course races at Infineon Raceway and Watkins Glen .

Already at the end of 2005 he tried his hand at the NASCAR Busch Series with similarly modest success . Since his team merged with another in early 2006 and switched from Dodge to Chevrolet , a new problem arose: Foyt had a direct contract with Dodge. An attempt to qualify for another team failed. Foyt has therefore not contested a NASCAR race since 2006.

An opportunity arose to return to the IndyCar Series at the 2006 IndyCar season finale at Chicagoland Speedway . Dario Franchitti was injured so that A. J. Foyt IV stepped in as a substitute driver for Andretti Green Racing and finished the race in 14th place. In the 2007 and 2008 seasons he drove in the IndyCar Series for Team Vision Racing , where he achieved his two best results: third place at Kentucky Speedway in 2007 and fifth in the race at Iowa Speedway in 2008, which was abandoned due to rain .

In 2009 he only took part in two IndyCar events, the Indianapolis 500 and the race at Texas Motor Speedway . The following year he was only registered for the Indy 500, but dropped out after failing to make it into the top 24 on Pole Day , whereupon Jaques Lazier took his place.

His motorsport career has been on hold since 2010; instead he works as a scouting assistant for the American football team Indianapolis Colts .
